18th Century Print Giraffe and Chevrotin

A large, decorative antique print by Martinet, taken from Histoire Naturelle, dated c. 1770

A charming illustration of a giraffe and a chevrotin, in the 18thC style, slightly naive, as you often see in these early days. The illustrations of these exotic animals was important to show those back in the European imperial home countries. The Chevrotin is the smaller animal seen through the legs of the  giraffe, and is the Haute Savoy goat used to make the eponymous cheese. We believe that it’s there to simply show the scale of the giraffe.

The antique print’s condition is good with a slight discolouration form age.

Please note that the print measures 14 x 8.75 inches inside mount but is 23 x 17.75 inches including the frame.  The frame is is modern though the print is antique.
