Chinese Lacquer Sewing Box
Chinese Export Lacquer Sewing Box Mid 19thC A wonderful Chinese workbox (mid 19th century) with a wooden carcase and applied black lacquer.
The decoration shows a domestic landscape in which we see ladies and gentlemen, all in gold leaf.
The box has four beautifully decorative, carved wooden feet showing mythical – and fearsome – beasts. It is unusual that these feet have survived. They are often missing from similar Chines working and sewing boxes.
The fine detail includes a sewing tray which lifts out and is a drawer underneath and steel swing hanldes. Inside there are many of the original carved bone fittings.
In surprisingly good condition for it’s age - with replacement hinges, one escutcheon and keys missing, with very minor chipping and some slight age cracks to the lacquer. The lacquer a little rubbed in places.
This lovely sewing box would make a fine addition to any collection of Chinese export lacquer.H: 16.5cmW: 36cmD: 27cm
